JUNIOR AND APPRENTICE WATER TRAINING WORKSHOP

Dog-and-handler teams may train the day before the trial from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost will be $50 per team.

In this workshop we will go over the training principles, equipment and water trial rules that apply to the Junior and Apprentice levels. Participants will work in small groups to learn boat boarding, boat riding and retrieving. Swimming and underwater retrieves will also be practiced. There will be ample opportunity to train in the water. The workshop will take place at the site of the trial, so dogs entered in the Sunday, July 28 trial will be familiar with the setting.

We are thrilled that Judy Murray has agreed to conduct the workshop. Judy is an endorsed Obedience instructor and has taught basic and progressive classes for many years. She has led numerous water training workshops and is a PWDCA-approved water trial judge. Judy will be judging the water trial on Sunday.

What to bring: dog, crate, water harness, water equipment for the level you are working on, poop bags, water for your dog and yourself, and lots of high value treats. Optional: float coat for your dog.

Participants are responsible for their own lunch. Tents or other shade devices are recommended as there is little natural shade. PWDCA trial regulations require handlers to wear closed-toe shoes and a life jacket when in the water. We will have extra life jackets and equipment in case you do not have them, but bring your own shoes!

The Saturday workshop and the Sunday trial are separate events. You may attend the training workshop even if you will not be trialing. Likewise, you may register for the trial without attending the workshop.

In preparation, please be sure to read the current PWDCA Water Trail Manual at www.pwdca.org. Pay particular attention to pages 21-31, the section on the Junior and Apprentice exercises; also pages 16-17, which describe equipment used at the Junior and Apprentice levels, and pages 5-11, which outline procedures, general rules and regulations. If you need to purchase water work equipment, go to www.4MyPWD.com or the Keystone website, www.kpwdc.wildapricot.org.

Participants coming from a distance may want to spend the night nearby. Hotel suggestions are listed in the water trial Premium, which is available on Perfdog.com. We are using Perfdog to manage registration and payment of all entries. Enter online and pay with a credit card. The non-refundable Perfdog administration fee is not included in the registration fee.

Registration opens on June 17, 2024 and closes on July 12, 2024. Entries and extras (meals, parking etc.) may be cancelled or changed online prior to the closing date, with refunds (less the Processing Fee per entry) available to keep as Perfdog credit, refund to credit card, or mail via check (less a $3 check fee). Entries and extras may be cancelled online after the closing date, but no refunds will be given.
